Here Endth The Lesson

Malone: Are you okay, pal?

Ness: I had a rough day on the job. Ness turns and starts away.

Malone: Are you going home now?.

Ness: I was about to.

Malone: Well, then, you just fulfilled the first rule of law enforcement. Make sure when your shift is over you go home alive. Here endeth the lesson.

This is how Malone is introduced in The Untouchables. I know many will say James Bond is his greatest role. And they may be right. But Malone was his Oscar winner and in my opinion, this role was his greatest character. Maybe not most iconic, but his greatest piece of work.

Hunt For Red October, The Rock, Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, The Man Who Would Be King, Rising Sun, Murder On The Orient Express, Entrapment, The Presidio. The list goes on and on.

Then there are the “other” ones. Time Bandits, Highlander, Family Business, even the voice of the Draco in Dragonheart. Not what you would call hit/great movies. But Sean Connery makes them worth watching.

But if I could pick a couple that I love him for. They would be.

#1 In The Name of The Rose with Christian Slater. This is the first movie I can remember seeing him in. It was when we had HBO, I must have watched it 5-6 times. I was riveted.

#2 And Playing By Heart. A small movie that introduced not only Angelina Jolie, but a young Jon Stewart to the world. His role is small, understated and beautiful. He was always a gentleman. He was always about the work. And never let fame “creep in” to his personal life. Watch this. This acceptance speech encapsulates him to a T. (Language warning)

Thank you Sean, you will live on forever. Because we will pull out all these movies from time to time, and enjoy what you have given us.
