I Can’t Believe The News Today…

… I can’t close my eyes and make it go away.

There’s this gnawing in the pit of my stomach… Not again…

How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?

I am weary of seeing this again and again… Not only targeting innocents, but targeting music… It’s getting personal… It’s getting too close to home…

‘Cos tonight
We can be as one, tonight.

WE are one, one people… We are the human race…

Broken bottles under children’s feet
Bodies strewn across the dead-end street.
But I won’t heed the battle call
It puts my back up, puts my back up against the wall.

Ariana Grande’s audience? Teenage girls! Terrorists targeting teenagers!

I can let it take hold, this feeling of despair combined with anger, I have to rise above it, I have to pray this away… I have to know He is there…

And the battle’s just begun
There’s many lost, but tell me who has won?
The trenches dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart.

My heart aches for the families, friends and neighbors, the ones who have to endure this kind of loss and pain… I can’t imagine it, I actually don’t want to…

How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
‘Cos tonight
We can be as one, tonight.

The fans of music, the concert goers, “my people”… At a show, you are one… You become one voice, you become one community, you become one… There’s a fellowship to it, it IS spiritual…

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away.
I’ll wipe your tears away.
I’ll wipe your tears away.
I’ll wipe your bloodshot eyes.

Hand over this grief, this anger, this despair… Comfort comes from Him when asked…

And it’s true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality.
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die.

There has to be an answer? Orlando, Sandy Hook, Brookline, OK City, Paris, Boston, 9/11, Aurora, Newtown… They just keep happening, we mourn, we talk, we move on… Where are the answers and solutions…? Have we become immune to it? Is it now just “part of life”? How do we accept that…?

The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” – Revelation 21:4

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday..

I debated writing this, posting this. I had a real internal struggle because I have been in U2 “geek mode” for the last week with the show being Wednesday night. But this song has been playing over, and over, and over in my head all night… There’s a reason why they are one of my favorite bands on the planet, the way they have always dealt with moments like this. The way they are a voice against the atrocities in our world. Bono and U2 will have something to say about this tomorrow night in Houston. I am truly sad that they have to, again… How long must they…?

  1. I love this, John. Thanks for seeing and not just letting it be another news item. The end of the world seems less apocalyptically epic and more intimately visceral when we let it sink in that yesterday was that end for some … for others today or tomorrow. We are keepers of the hope that He is totally present, tattered and tear-stained, in this dangerous world of free will. With us still, in spite of our long litany of rejections. Still with us. Keep a candle flickering, especially in the dark.
