The Cost Of Being Open…

I have a very good friend, who is going through a very tough time right now. I call these times “The Barrel”. She, and her husband, are in it. And at the moment, it won’t stop rolling down the uneven, rocky hill. I am not going into details, but trust me, they are going through a very tough time.

Here’s the thing, they are some of the most kind, generous, giving, sharing, LOVING people you will ever meet. They open their house to all sorts of people, people in need, people struggling with life, people trying to make sense of bad relationships, people who have lost their way in life… They don’t judge, they just come along side and are present for them…

Where do they get their pets from? The shelter of course! The ones abandoned, or abused, or just not loved and they welcome them into their home! These lucky pets are not just pets, they are family, they are loved like they have never been loved before.

And when a parent could no longer live on their own, guess what? They opened their doors and took em in. Their home, their lives, their dynamic went from 2 people to 3. That parent is now a priority in their already busy lives.

And on top of that, my friend has changed careers. Deciding that helping people with their health and lifestyle is more important than her old job. Making her professional life about making other peoples lives better.

You caught on to a theme here?

Why do bad things happen to people like this…?  That’s a tough one… They believe in God, they share what they have with help people in need, why does this happen?

When you decide to live your life “open”, when you decide to mirror Jesus’ way, nothing here on Earth is promised. Nothing in the bible says you will have a successful business, that every moment is sunshine and rainbows, that life gets easier, that your problems are solved, that your personal life and relationships are perfect. AS a matter of fact he promises nothing for you here on earth, just that you are forgiven and you spend eternity in Heaven.

“Is there anyone here who, planning to build a new house, doesn’t first sit down and figure the cost so you’ll know if you can complete it? If you only get the foundation laid and then run out of money, you’re going to look pretty foolish. Everyone passing by will poke fun at you: ‘He started something he couldn’t finish.’ – Luke 14:28-30

My friends are building that house, and have been since I first met them. They are not letting “the world” and what the world is throwing at them change who they are, how they treat others. They are not “putting up walls”, sheltering their lives, taking the easy path. They are living WIDE OPEN! And they are certainly not letting what the world thinks effect who they are.

They inspire me… I probably need to say that to them more. They truly do. They are not what you would call “traditional Christians” (they don’t fit the stereotypical mold), but their walk is just beautiful to me. So do me a favor, say a prayer for them. They could use them right now… And let’s try to live OUR lives more “open”…
